Ode to Year 10 Camp - 2008

To motivate this lot, God what a mission,
We started early, we showed photos, from every position,
Till finally we had an acceptable amount,
To cost towards Lakewood – oh what an account.

The wall climbing and horse trekking were a hit with everyone,
Even down in the paddocks, where the Frisbee Golf was done.
The kayaking as usual was the highlight of camp,
No comparisons though, to the stormy Monday night’s damp.

The camaraderie and team support were awesome to see,
The gender separate groups weren’t exactly hiccup free.
New friends were made, new leaders spotted,
The students responded well to all tasks allotted.

Our final acknowledgement to the teachers who come,
They’ve taken everything on board, even dog bites on the bum…

A poem by Miss Gayle Murray.

Here are the photographs from the three days at Lakewood Lodge taken by Mr. Thorpe and Miss Murray.

Year 9 Activities Day 3...

It is the third and final day of activities for the Tamaki College Year 9 students. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a great time at Rainbow's End. The screams could be heard all over the park as the students went on all the rides, sometimes over and over again!!! We were based in a great area in the park, just next to the Gold Rush where the huge bar-b-que was used to cook up loads of tasty food.
Big thanks to Mrs George and Miss Robertson, the Year 9 Deans, for making sure we were all organised and entertained over the last 3 days.

After that, we got back on the buses and went across to the Berkeley Cinema at Botany Downs. We had a cinema all to ourselves to watch the fantastic new movie, Madagascar 2 - Escape to Africa.

Maths Calendars Looking Good....

The Transformation Geometry project is an integral part of the Yr10 Mathematics programme at Tamaki College. It allows the students to apply their skills and knowledge of Reflection, Rotation, Translation and Enlargement, learnt formally in class, to a practical situation, in this case of creating a design on a square tile. With further applications of Rotation and Translation, identical tiles are tessellated to generate more intricate patterns.

Transformation Geometry and in particular the symmetries that are produced, underlies the arts and crafts of all cultures. It influences paintings, sculpture, music, dance and poetry and is an important tool of geologists, archaeologists, physicists and of course mathematicians. In a more everyday situation, Transformation Geometry is used to produce fabric, wallpaper and wrapping paper designs.

The construction of these patterns is simplicity in itself, no “artistic bent” is needed, just some Mathematics. First a simple motif is formed, literally any “squiggle” will do. A template of the motif is made out of cardboard. This is placed on a square in any chosen position and using guidelines and points, the template is reflected, rotated or translated or a combination of these. During this process, the motif often overlaps itself creating a variety of regions. Using colour creatively further defines the design. One individual tile, though may be very attractive in itself, is only an element in the overall pattern created by the tessellation and one individual tile can generate an almost endless number of different patterns. The students created the original patterns by hand, technology has perfected them.

Over the years a great variety of exceptional patterns have been designed by the students, which regrettably have disappeared into oblivion. When compared with commercial publications, the students designs often surpass these both in design and structure and visual effect. Therefore it seems a good time to publish some of the students work, hence the creation of this calendar.

All of the designs made by the students at Tamaki College, in 10KKo were used for publication is this calendar.

We hope that this Calendar will give you pleasure throughout the year and remind you of how Mathematics can be used to tap the hidden talents of our students.

These calendars were created in Mrs. David's Maths class using Adobe Illustrator.
We are selling the calendars in school for $10.00

Here is a preview of what the finished calendar looks like.

Film Festival...

It has been a fantastic day here at Tamaki College. We have had our film festival to celebrate the end of the year for our Manaiakalani EHSAS cluster. All of the schools in our local area have been coming to visit and watch the films produced by their students. It has been a really busy day with 4 shows during the day and another tonight for the community to come and see the work. All of the students did extremely well all day with their presentations and everyone went away very impressed with the work. If you want to see the work for yourself then check out the links down the side of this page.

Film Festival Preparations...

It's the highlight of the year for our cluster of schools working on the Manaiakalani EHSAS projects. It has been a year of hard work but celebrations are starting in the auditorium of Tamaki College.

90 Years of Armistice Day Remembered.

Today, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year, thousands in New Zealand and around the world gathered to mark the end of what was supposed to be the "war to end all wars".
We did just that here at Tamaki College. To mark 90 years of Armistice Day, we gathered by the flag poles and the last post was played. A 2 minute silence was held there and in all the classrooms to pay our respects to those who fought and gave their lives for our freedom.
A reading was done of part of the poem "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon.
Here it is in full.

For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Bro' Town Producer - Elizabeth Mitchell

Tctv were delighted today to meet Elizabeth Mitchell, the producer of Bro' Town. She came to St. Pius school to talk to the students there and from other schools in the area about the process they go through to create an episode of the top New Zealand show.
Two of our Year 12 students, Mikaira and Francis, were at the talk and they found it very interesting to hear how Bro' Town was started and how they created the characters for the show. We saw videos of how an episode was put together and we were delighted to see a special video from Oscar Knightley with a message for the students.
Highlights included :- seeing how they used photographs of the actors to help develop how the characters looked, seeing early versions of the characters and how they have changed and seeing how they get from their initial ideas through to the final episodes.

TCTV : Flossy Tangata talks about Outward Bound

TCTV talks to Flossy Tangata, who reports back from her experience at Outward Bounds.

Being at outward bound was a really great experience for me. I left Auckland on the 2nd of August 2008 knowing that I had no confidence in myself and knowing I didn’t believe in myself. Being at outward bound for 21 days changed my life. It made me build up my confidence and helped me believe in my self a lot more. It was very challenging for me and others at outward bound. At first it was hard for me but in the end it was worth the hard work and I completed it to the end.

The things we did at outward bound were tramping, kayaking, sailing, rock climbing and high ropes. We also did a six day journey and we walked 71 km in four days. It was really hard and was really challenging when we sailed from Ship’s Cove all the way back to Anakiwa.

If I was to recommend this to others, I would say go hard and do the best you can and enjoy every minute that you can. This changes peoples life’s like it changed mine.

TCTV : Tamaki College : 1st 15 V Kelston

TCTV reporting from the Thursday afternoon match here at Tamaki College.
Write up by Mr. Harris
Camera work - Pene, Aquilla, Emma, Leon.

2.30 KO – brilliantly fine, Big crowd –early finish to school, Our sponsors (NZ Glen Innes Police) out in force – really good feel.

Kelston pack huge – bigger as apack than St Pauls and St Kents.

Tamaki dominated territory and procession for most of the first half. Semisi Ahoafi landed two early penalties from close range for a 6–0 lead. Simon Suaesi scored a try from a set move which was then upgraded to a penalty try. The conversion made it 13-0 to Tamaki. With five minutes to go in the half Kelston convert a penalty, but Tamaki respond with a try to Steven Sioneuesile from broken play and involving numerous inter passing. 20–3 to Tamaki at half time.

The second half saw the Kelston forward pack really muscle up and make yards. Kelston score a converted try from close range after constant pressure and the momentum in the game has changed – 20-10. More Kelston pressure is rewarded with a drop goal and then another well taken try out wide. Only good Tamaki scrambling defence is keeping Tamaki in the game. 20-18 to Tamaki.

At last Tamaki were able to mount an attack 20 minutes into the second half and a try from a charge down kick is denied by an earlier Tamaki knock on. Kelston had a chance to take the lead with three minutes to go, but the penalty went wide. Tamaki finished with a late surge, which finished just short – but time was up and Tamaki scraped home 20-18.

This was a physical, yet skilled game which produced a tight result. The game was well refereed by Pat Drum who was clear and accurate with his decisions. Thanks must go to the 1st XV sponsors – NZ Police (Glen Innes station), who turned out to support the Teams and made for a great occasion.

Tamaki 14 Lost to Auckland Grammar School 27

Tamaki started the game well dominating territory and procession and were rewarded with an early solo try to George Moala. However Auckland Grammar began gaining the ascendancy at the breakdown turning over Tamaki procession and soon were on the scoreboard with a well constructed try and two penalties. Halftime score 11-8 to AGS.
Auckland Grammar scored again straight after halftime when ruck ball was kicked through and pounced upon by Auckland Grammar to get a points break on Tamaki. Further penalties extended their lead and both teams scored tries late in a free flowing second half. Final score 27-14 to AGS

TCTV : Tamaki College : Pre Season 1st 15 match v MAGS

TCTV went out to Mount Albert Grammar to watch the preseason match...

The report is written by 1st 15 assistant coach, Mr. Tindling.

The Tamaki College 1st XV travelled out to MAGS on the first Wednesday of the holidays for a preseason fixture. The day was windy and Tamaki started with the advantage. MAGS started the better of the two teams and scored three early tries out wide. At 17-0 Tamaki entered the MAGS 22 for the first time and scored a well taken try through James Mata. At 17-5 Tamaki were right back in the game but a late try right in the final minute of the first half put the score out to 22-5.

Tamaki started the second half much better than the first and dominated possession and territory and were rewarded with a well taken try to Grady Hunt of a flick pass from his brother Jack. Tamaki continued to dominate possession but wayward passes lead to MAGS scoring two more tries on counterattack. The final score MAGS 32-12. A good hit out for the Tamaki boys against last years 1A champions and with a number of senior Tamaki boys being rested it showed we are not to far off it.
